    BIRTH: His birth year comes from his pension file which says born 1761 and age 71 in 1832, but his tombstone say age 79 at death in 1837 (b. 1758). 1835 Pensioners list says age 83 (b. 1752). He was the son of Thomas Arthur of Bedford Co VA. whose will dated Feb. 17, 1799 probated Jan. 24, 1820 Bedford Co names him as a son. Will book E 5 p. 169

    PENSION: Joel Arthur S16034. (Lengthy pension file) VA Line applied 19 Sep 1832 Jackson Co OH aged 71 born 1761 Bedford Co, VA and enlisted there and then in 1802 moved to Greenbrier Co VA for 10 years and then to Jackson Co, OH.

    SOLDIER: American Revolution, Pension drafted and served 1780 about 4 mos under Capt. John Trigg, Lt. John Davis, Ensign William Hancock, Genl. Muhlenburg, Col. Maryweather, Maj. McClure. in Jun 1781 drafted for 3 1/2 mos. under Capt. Thomas Leftridge (Leftwich), Maj. Overstreet. witnesses Amos Jenkins and Benjamin Arthur. (crossed out Theophilis Blake and Joseph Horton). was born in Bedford Co in 1761 until thirty years since (1832) when he moved to Greenbrier Co where he resided about ten years when he moved to Jackson Co OH where he new resides and has resided about twenty years. Mrs. E. S. Moss of Williamsburg, KY said to be descendant of Joel in letter. said she read p. 622 McAllisters Militia Joel Arthur age 83 living in 1835 on Pension List. He marched through Richmond thence stationed between Little York & Norfolk, until sometime in the month of September, following he thinks he served 3 1/2 months at which time he was discharged.

    BIO: District No. 2. The Joel Arthur house on the hill a short distance west of it was built about 1816 and there is a tradition that one of his sons shot a deer at the lick nearby from the upstairs window on the west side. A grandson, Thomas Arthur, now owns the old homestead. Many other descendants live in the county. Joel Arter (this is the spelling on his tombstone) died Sep 15, 1837, aged 69 years. Nancy, his wife, preceded him No.v 16, 1835, aged 77 years. they were buried on the high point of the hill west of the house and a number of other pioneers lie beside them. The house descended to their son, Azariah, who died Oct. 8, 1886. Hanging Rock Iron Region by Eugene Willard Vol. 1 1916 p 393 and others.

    NEWS: The Times-Journal Nov. 16 1997 has Opinion Cartoon that says. Here rests a Revolutionary War Soldier, Joel Arthur, to whom we are indebted for our Independence. He died in Jackson County in 1837 and was recently honored there with a new Marker for Valor and Service to his Country.

    State of Ohio }
    Jackson County Ss } on this 19 day of Septr. 1832 personally appeared in open Court, before the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas now sitting, Joel Arthur a resident of Jefferson Township in Jackson County, Ohio aged about seventy one years of age who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7 1832.
    That he entered the service of the United States under the following named Officers and served as herein stated. That some time in the year 1780 when he resided in Bedford County Virginia he was drafted in a Militia Company Commanded by Captain John Trigg, Lieut. John Davis, Ensign William Hancock, under the Command of Gen’l. Muhlenburg [sic: Peter Muhlenberg], Col. Maryweather [sic: Meriwether] Major McClure. That they marched from Bedford County to Portsmouth Va. where he thinks he served four months, when he was discharged which discharge has since been lost by time or accident. That some time in the month of June 1781 at Bedford County aforesaid where he still resided, he was drafted in the Company of Militia commanded by Capt Thomas Leftridge [sic: Thomas Leftwich] under the command of Major [John] Overstreet, that he marched through Richmond thence stationed between Little york & Norfolk, untill some time in the month of September following he thinks he serve 3½ months at which time he was discharged which discharge has also been lost by time and accident that during all these periods he was in no considerable battle. That he has no documentary evidence of his said services and that he knows of no person living whose testimony he can procure, who can testify to his service.
    He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a Pension or annuity except the present, and
    declares that his name is not on the Pension roll of the agency of any state
    That he was born in Bedford County Va he has no record of his age, that he resided in Bedford Co. Va untill about thirty years since when he moved to Greenbriar [sic: Greenbrier] County Va. where he resided about ten years, when he moved to Jackson County Ohio where he now resides & where he has resided about twenty years.

    ARTHUr - the Arthurs were pioneers of Jackson County, having moved here from Greenbrier County, VA in 1810 along with the Radebaughs, Blakes and Jenkins when Jackson County was still part of Gallia County, The progenitor of this family was Joel Arthur who was born in 1761 in Bedford County, VA and served in the American Revolution as a private in the militia of Bedford County. Joel was the son of Thomas Arthur and was the grandson of John Arthur who was born in northern Ireland about 1718 and immigrated to Caroline County about 1740.

    Joel Arthur built his home in the northeast corner of Jefferson Twp. near Clay and his children settled in the adjacent townships of Madison, Franklin and Bloomfield. When Jefferson Twp. was first formed in 1822, Joel was appointed Overseer of the Poor. Joel's wife, Nancy, died in 1835 and Joel died in 1837. Both are buried in the family cemetery near Clay.
    The will of Joel Arthur that was probated in 1837 which should indicate his children disappeared, but the following are believed to be his children: 91) Thomas, born 1788, who married Sarah Blake and remained in Virginia when the family moved to Jackson county, (2) Nimrod who married Nancy Parrish and died in 1823, (3) Stephen who married Margaret Tolbert and died in 1846, (4) Phoebe who married Theopolis Blake, (5) Jane, born 1786, who married James Blake and died in 1849, (6) Amos, born 1791, who married Anna Elliot and moved to Auglaize County, OH where he died in 1874, (7) Benjamin born 1794, who married Catherine Radebaugh and died in 1860, (8) Azariah born 1797, who married Nancy Sprigg and died in 1886, (9) Elizabeth born 1798, who married Jesse Radebaugh, (10) Lewis born 1803 who married Malinda Flemming and died about 1884 in Scioto county, (11) Joel, Jr., born 1809, who married Letha Davis. The brothers, Nimrod, Benjamin, and Amos, served in the War of 1812 in Captain John Roaddanour's Company of Mounted Infantry of Gallia County, OH.
