Jesse Nicholls or Nickols was born in 1859 at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. He was the son of a straw plaiter called Susan Warner and an agricultural labourer called Daniel Nicholls. As Susan and Daniel were not married, Jesse's birth was registered as Jesse Nickols Warner, but in all other records he used his father's surname. The 1861 and 1871 censuses each find Jesse living with his parents and siblings at Nomansland in Wheathampstead. By 1871 he was working as an agricultural labourer.
When Jesse was about twelve years old, his mother died. A few months later Jesse's father married Susan's half-sister, Maria Hornet, who thus went from being Jesse's aunt to also being his stepmother.
In 1881, Jesse emigrated to Australia. He sailed from Plymouth on 20th January 1881 on the 'Duke of Athole', arriving at Maryborough in Queensland on 3rd May 1881.
On 9th June 1890 he married Kate Eliza Carrick, a domestic servant who had also emigrated from England in the 1880s. They married at the Salvation Army Barracks in Gympie. Between 1891 and 1907 they went on to have nine children together, although two died young.
Back in England, Jesse's father died in 1901.
Jesse worked as a farmer, and the family moved around within Queensland. Electoral rolls show that from at least 1905 to 1912 the family lived at South Isis, from 1912 to 1917 at Goomeri, from 1922 to 1925 at Nikenbah, and from 1928 at Torquay Road in Pialba.
Jesse died on 24th October 1935, aged 76. He was buried at Polson Cemetery in Point Vernon in Hervey Bay. Kate Eliza survived him by nearly 13 years.
