  3.   Posted on Roots Web by Patricia Couchman (sponbu@gmail.com)dated 5 Jan 2008: I am new to the Internet. Re your l/29/03 posting about Jeremiah Bresee, I respectfully would like to add this info. My gr-gr-gr grandmother, Ruth Bresee Strain, was born 7 May 1815; died 27 June 1891. She married David Strain on 18 Mar 1831 and they resided in Worcester, Otsego County, NY. She was buried on the Roe Farm in South Worcester, NY and the undertaker was listed as "Overseer of the Poor". I believe one of her daughters married a Roe. Ruth's death certificate lists Jeremiah Bresee as her father and Melinda Hawkins as her mother. The only info I have found on them was a mortgage at Masonville, Delaware County, NY. I believe my Ruth was another child of the Jeremiah Bresee on your 1/29/03 posting. Also you had listed their child #6 as Hawkins Bresee. His name ties in nicely with his mother Melinda Hawkins. A review of a copy of the death certificate confirms the above.

1834 land records dated 11 Apl 1834 shows Phineas P. Bresee (PPB) of Franklin, Delaware Co., NY, selling land lying in the town of Davenport as part of Lot #20 of the Charlotte River Patent on the north side of the Charlotte River to Henry TenEick of Davenport being the farm previously owned by Jeremiah Bresee (Deed Book N page 147 of film 557791). This land must represent PPB's inherited portion which he is now selling.

1833 land records dated 13 Feb 1833 shows John J. Bresee selling part of lot #20 of the Charlotte River patent on the north side of the Charlotte River which had to be part of his inherence from his father, Jeremiah Bresee, since Malinda Bresee had a one sixth interest and upon her demise would revert back to Hawkings Bresee (film #557790 Deed Book L page 596).

1830 land records shows Hawkins Bresee and wife Lucy grantor and John J. Bresee grantee for part of lot #20 in the Charlotte River patent, Delware Co., NY, formerly property of Jeremah Bresee and Malinda Bresee, widow (Deed Book J pages 608-609 film 557789).

1827 - Letters of Administration, recorded 6 April 1827, recorded in Delhi, NY, were granted to Malinda Brezee and Stephen Olmstead of the town of Davenport on the estate of Jeremiah Brezee late of Davenport, deceased died intestate.

1826 Jeremiah and wife sold land to Harmanus Bresee (Book H, P. 91). Material received 6/1/1997 from C.G. Brisee shows records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the town of Summit, Schonahie County, NY, records the deaths or burials of those who were not members of the church from Sept 5, 1826 and shows the death of Jeremiah Brazee as of 26 Dec 1826 (unpublished church records, source: DAR of NYS 1940-41, Vol 154, pg. 226). Death of Jeremiah Brezie on 25 Dec 1826 per Lutheran Ch. of Town of Summit at Luthernville, Schorahie Co., NY (LDS film 1293955 Item 5, page 29). 1887 deposition by his son, John J., for Civil War benefits (see file JohnJBresee.jpg) dated 11 May 1887 mentions many facts including that his father was killed by his team running off with him in the state of New York.

1825 - On Feb. 20, 1825, his wife, Melinda, became a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the town of Summit at Lutheranville, Schonahie Co., NY, per the records of confirmation by Rev. Perry G. Cole. (See LDS film 1293955 Item 5, page 16.)

1824 Jeremiah Brezee and wife sold land to David Brezee (LDS film 557758, Index of Deeds, Delaware Co., NY, Deed Book G, p. 72).

1823 - Land records of Grantor Index for Delaware County, NY, shows dealings between Jeremiah Bresee, grantor, and Phineas Phillips (foster father of Phineas Philips Bresee, Jeremiah's son) of the town of Franklin, grantee (Book F, Page 243 LDS film #557786).

1821 land records shows David Brezee grantee and Jeremiah Brezee grantor on part of lot #19 of the Charlotte River patent with Malenda Brazee, wife, recorded 4 Jan. 1825 in Deed Book G page 69 and 72 (LDS film 557787).

1817 In March 31, 1817 the town of Davenport, Delaware Co., NY, was created from parts of the older towns of Kortright and Maryland, Otsego Co., NY. On April 8, 1817 the first town meeting was held. On 26 April 1817 when the Davenport School Board met for the purpose of forming the school districts, Jeremiah Bresee's farm formed a corner of the School Districts #4 & 5 being next to the Charlotte River. See "The History of Delaware County" by W.W. Munsell, The Town of Davenport, found at: www.dcnyhistory.org/books/mundav.html.

1816 land records recorded 5 Feb 1827 on the estate of Jeremiah Bresee, deceased, establish that he and Melinda Bresee sold part of Lot #20 of the Charlotte River patent on the north side of the Charlotte River to Harmonas Bresee on 6 May 1816. The 1827 record was witnessed by David Bresee, their son, and Steven Olmstead, joint administrator of Jeremiah's estate. Jeremiah Bresee was of the town of Maryland, Otsego Co. at the time (Deed Book page 91, LDS film 557788).

1812-1813 Jeremiah's son, Phineas Philip Bresee's (PPB) death certificate shows him 82 years 11 months old at time of death. PPB died on 31 Oct. 1895. This would set his birth date to Nov. 1812. The book "A Prince in Israel" states PPB was born in Schohanie County, NY, in 1813. The LDS church provided info on Jeremiah and his wife, both as born in Davenport, Delware Co., NY(?). This showed birth of their son, PPB as about 1806 in Davenport, Delaware County, New York (town of Davenport was not formed until 1817; thus 1806 year and location may not be correct).

1810 census for Maryland, Otsego Co., NY, shows a J. Bresee living next to J.C. Bresee and C. Bresee (this may be his father, John C. and brother, Christopher). If this is Jeremaih's family, then all the children over age 11 are missing and there is one too many males reported under the age of 10. The 1810 census also has Phineas Phillips (PPB's foster father) living in Colchester, Delaware Co., NY, thereby being in the area to take Jeremiah's youngest son, PPB, into his home with his wife, Ruth Hawkins, who was PPB's aunt, and raise the child as is the family story. PPB was born in Nov. 1812. See both Dr. Bangs book on Phineas F. Bresee and the book "Phineas F. Bresee, A Prince in Israel".

1808-1810 "Military minutes of the Council of Appointment of the State of New York 1783-1821" pages 934, 997 and 1071 found at Heritage Quest Online, shows a Jeremiah Bresee/Braser/Bressee, lieutenant from Delaware Co. Wilmer Bresee's study dated 11 July 1936 and "Handmaidens of the Lord" by Gwendolyn Pickens page 13 show in 1807 and 1808 lists of the Militia Officers of the Delaware Co. Militia: there appears the name of Jeremiah Bresee, Lieutenant.

1808 Phinehas Philips was a Plaintiff in the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas and received a judgment of $208 from a Gaylord Haskins on 10 June 1808. This must have been his father-in-law, Gaylord Hawkins. Source: Delaware County, NY Genealogy and History Site found at www.dcnyhistory.org/judgments_1797-1808.html.

1800 census Jeremiah may be be in the household of his father-in-law, Gaylord Hawkins in Chatham, Columbia Co., NY, not far from Hillsdale.

1797 the county of Delaware was formed from parts of Otsego and Ulster counties, NY.

1794 - Page 37 of Dr. Bangs' book on Phineas F. Bresee DD, indicates that in 1794 Jeremiah and bother Christopher, bought Lot 34 of Fitch's Patent in Davenport, a former John Jacob Astor holding. The Jeremiah farmhouse still stands at the south end of Lot 34. The atlas of 1869 terms it "Sugar Farm". The Olmstead/Olmsted family owned property on almost all sides of Lot 34. Note: the town of Davenport was form in 1817, see above.

1790 census for Hillsdale, Columbia Co. shows a John C. Brissee (father of Jeremiah), Andrew H. Brissee (Andreas H. Brazie is buried in Hillsdale), Andreis C. Brisee (brother of John C. Bresee), and a John H. Brissee.

1779 on page 42 of "Remarkable records of Rev. Gideon Bostwick, 1770-1792, Great Barrington, MA" by Gideon Bostwick received from C.G. Brisee shows John Burzee and Elisabeth had Jeremiah christened on 4 July 1779 in St. James (Episcopal) Church in Great Barrington. Sharon Reck's study dated 8/19/1995 shows Jermiah Bresee christened 4 July 1779 at Gt. Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA.

1777 Eleanor Bresee Winters family oral tradition is that Harmon Bresee was born in Davenport in 1789 and who was the son of Jeremiah Bresee who possible was born abt 1777. Phyllis Kinzie's e-mail of 23 Sept 07 proves Harmon is son of John C. Bresee and Elizabeth Rossman.

1776 or earlier possible birth year is given by Pat Gilbert for Jeremiah with a location of Gt. Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA.

6/13/94 letter from Patricia Bresee, 5800 Martin Mill Pike, Knoxville, TN 37920, stated research showed (appears she is using study done by Wilmer E. Bresee undated) in Mitchell's "History of Bridgwater, Mass". "Jeremiah Bressoc (Bresee)" probably came from Whareham, Mass. and settled in S.B. (may mean South Boston or South Bridgwater). His children were: Abisha 30 Mar 1760 m Sally Conant; Lucy 12 Apr 1762 m David Conant; Jonah 23 Jan 1764 m Eunice Washburn; John 10 Nov 1766 m Nancy Packard; Abraham 25 Nov 1768; Adam 7 Feb 1770 m Joanna Pratt; Sarah 25 June 1772; Polly 3 Dec 1774; Charity ? m David Benson; twins: Jeremiah & Nehemia; Anthony ? m Molly Holmes. She also indicated that in 1817 the town of Davenport, NY, was created from the older towns of Kortright & Maryland. Also see "Handmaidens of the Lord" by Pickens. Based on the above, I do not think this family is related.

See Bunny and Linda Bresee files which has a chart of Jeremiah and Malinda Bresee family. It shows Phineas P. born in 1806.
