    [The following is from bounty-land records in the Library of Virginia. The file contains document dated 25 Sep 1826 certifying that Catharine Wood was the heir of Jeremiah Basham. The legibility of this and some other online images is too poor for transcription.]

    Nathaniel Chapman [Nathan Chapman W6654] being sworn according to law deposeth and saith
    that he [several undeciphered words] in the early part of the year 1778 for during the war into the company commanded By Capt [several undeciphered words] from the year 1778 until the surrender of [several undeciphered words] at which time and place said Bassham and all the Troops in Charleston [several undeciphered words] deponent further sayeth that said Bassham served in the capacity of a corporel or Ensign untill he was taken Prisoner – deponent was [several undeciphered words] said Bassham and was Exchanged with said Bassham at Williamsburg and further sayeth that said Bassham was ordered to Yorktown and there joined the continental Army again and he (this deponent) was discharged and returned to Cumberland County his term of Enlistment having Expired previous thereto deponent further sayeth that said Bassham served out the term of his Enlistment and was honourably discharged in 1783 and that in 1784 deponent and said Bassham moved to Bedford County and that he has been acquainted with [several undeciphered words] – deponent further sayeth that the Regiment [several undeciphered words] Parker detachment but the number he does not remember [evidently a reference to the 1st Virginia Detachment commanded by Col. Richard Parker], and that Collonel Parker was killed at Charleston during
    the siege [29 Mar - 12 May 1780] and further sayeth not.

    Sir I am Requested by Mrs Catharine Wood Heir at law of Jeremiah Bassham to ask of the Executive Council an official Certificate of the sevises of the Said Bassham who recived a Sergeants bounty of land from Virginia in the Month of oct’r 1826 which Servis Entitles her to one hundred acres of land from the United States With Respect &c/
