Will of Jasper Haynes

WILL OF JASPER HAYNES, CULPEPER COUNTY, VIRGINIA

In the name of God Amen. I, Jasper Haynes of the County of Culpeper and State of Virginia, being very low and weak but of sound memory and calling the mind the uncertainty of this life and that all flesh must yield unto death when it shall please God to call, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner following:
My soul I recommend to Almighty God who gave it me trusting in the merits of my Saviour to rise again to life Eternal, my body to be buried in a decent manner at the direction of my Executors hereafter mentioned and as to my worldly goods I give and bestow in manner as followeth:
Imprimis, I lend to my beloved wife during her natural life or widowhood that part of my estate hereafter mentioned viz. One Negro man named Sam, one Negro woman named Dinah and one Negro girl named Jenny, also the half of my stock of all kinds also two feather beds and furniture, also a black walnut table and desk and one chest and half of my pewter and one large iron pott and a flax and cotton wheel and half of my plantation working tools.
Item the 1st. I give and bequeath unto my son JOSEPH that part of my land lying and being between Dark Run and White Oak Run joining Bobo, Powel, and Ryner to him and his heirs forever. I give to my said son one young cow to him and his heirs forever. I give and bequeath to my two sons JASPER and STEPHEN the residue of my land in Culpeper County to be equally divided between them, my son Jasper having sold his right with my consent to my son Joseph, I give and bequeath his my son Jasper's part to my son Joseph to him and his heirs forever.
2ndly. And the residue of my estate not already given (including those I have lent by beloved wife (except the stock of all kinds and household furniture) I give and bequeath unto the rest of my children: ELIZABETH, MOSES, BENJAMIN, MARY, JAMES, ANNE, and WILLIAM to be equally divided amongst them in manner as followeth, that the Negroes and other part of estate be set up at publick auction, no person admitted to bid but my children the whole of them having equal right to bid one against another and the amount of the estate to be equally divided after they having don bidding and each part or proportion I give to each of them each of their heirs and forever.
It is my will and desire that all my estate be appraised at the old rates valued in hard money and sold the same way and that the whole of my children have an equal part of all my stock and household furniture. And, lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my sons Joseph and Jasper Haynes my executors of this my last Will and Testament and do hereby revoke all former wills by me made and do declare this my last Will and Testament.

The will was proved on the 21st day of January 1782.
