On 20 Apr 1732, at the age of 11, in West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England, "Oxlade Jane,a poor child of the Parish of West Wycombe, [was] indentured by the Church Wardens and Overseers of the Poor unto Henry Shank, Taylor [probably her maternal grandfather], for seven years to learn the Art of a Housewife."
