Jane's birth registration has not been found. There is no Jane at all listed in the Victorian Digger Pioneer Index with Ellen DIXON or DICKSON as mother, or with George GROVES as a father. Although she is named as Jane GROVES on her marriage certificate and George is listed as the father on Jane's marriage and death certificates, for reasons outlined below, it appears unlikely that George GROVES is actually her father. Her mother is named as Ellen DIXON on her death certificate. According to her age on her death certificate, Jane was born about 7 years before Ellen and George were married. If George was her father, then it is unlikely that Ellen DIXON was her mother.

Ellen DIXON was married firstly to John POWER. It appears she had 4 children by him between 1859 and 1869. Jane may have been the fifth, but it seems unlikely as she was born about 1874 and was not registered as Jane POWER.

In between the time she had Jane and the time she married George GROVES, Ellen DIXON was "married" to someone with the surname LEWIS (no record has yet been found). She had one or two children to him, both of whom are younger than Jane. Their births are registered in 1877 and 1879.

Ellen and George had a further 3 children, and also appear to have raised Jane's first daughter, Jessie May (known as May), who was born out of wedlock, as their own.

Jane died at her daughter Alice's house, which was her usual residence at the time. Cause of death was given as Uraemia (48 hours), Congestive cardiac failure (14 days), Coronary sclerosis and she was also reported to be suffering from Senility.
