James had worked as an agricultural labourer, a groom and general labourer during his life. He died of severe burns and shock having suffered some form of seizure while tarring a fence. In taking the seizure he managed to pull a cauldron of burning tar over himself and it took several hours for him to die. An inquest into his death was held on 21st July 1910 and the incident was reported in the local papers.
