Arthur joined the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment and subsequently volunteered for the Machine Gun Corps. He subsequently served with the Heavy Branch, who went into battle in the first tanks. Arthur was killed by artillery fire at the Battle of Messines in June 1917, while trying to dig out tank tracks with his Sgt.
