New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial, Vol. 2, p. 869, lists James as the son of Baptist, but the birth records of Concord only list a birth for a James who is son of John, and who happens to be the right age to marry Mary Barrett. In a deed dated 31 Dec 1696 (Middlesex Deeds Vol. 13, p. 72)], James Smedley and his wife Mary, sell 50 acres in Concord "formerly belonging to my Hono'd ffather John Smedley" to Edward Wright. It is signed by both James Smedley and his wife Mary.
