271. James Semple, eldest son of Alexander Semple (268), was commonly called "English" from his having lived in England, and to distinguish him from "Merchant" Semple of another family.^S1

He married Ann Houston, by whom he had eight sons and one daughter. (The remains of "English" Semple and his wife are interred in the Cartside burial plot, in the old kirkyard of Kilbarchan.)^S1

274. Alexander Semple, eldedest son of James or "English" Semple, was born in London, April 29, 1805; emigrated to America, May, 1848; died at Warehouse Point, Ct., July 5, 1873. Married Jeannette Buchanan (born February 11, 1806), granddaughter of James Buchanan (of Kilbarchan), antiquarian and intimate friend of the poet, Robert Tannahill. Issue, three sons and three daughters:^S1

Jeannette Buchanan's mother was a Grant (of the Highlands), whose mother was a McFarlane of the Clan McFarlane.^S1

Granddaughter of James Buchanan (of Kilbarchan), antiquarian and intimate friend of the poet, Robert Tannahill.^S1

James Buchanan, grandfather of Jeannette was a descendant of the distinguished reformer and Latin Poet, George Buchanan (born February, 1506), whose family descended from Prince Ansela, who, in 1016, lent his assistance to King Malcolm the Second, in repelling the Danes.^S1

   In London, however, Major Semple appeared in June 1807 at Worship Street public office, charged with defrauding two females, but was acquitted on a technicality. According to Family Search, on the 13 September 1813 Charles Hardie Semple Lisle was born in St Marylebone in London, the child of James George Semple Lisle and Anna Alton. It is of course not impossible that John Semple born in 1808, and James Semple, born in 1811 (ie. Jan 1810), to James Semple and Ann Houston in London also belong in the family.
