James Nicholls was born in 1876 at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire, the youngest child of a straw plaiter named Maria Nicholls, formerly Hornet, and her husband Daniel William Nicholls, an agricultural labourer. He was baptised on 30th July 1876 at Wheathampstead. Sadly, James died when he was less than two years old, dying in 1878.
