Leland earned his teaching degree, A.B., at East Central Teachers College (later East Central University), Ada, OK, 1938. In 1956, he received his MA in School Administration from Oklahoma State University. He was a football and baseball coach on the Junior level, and later headbasketball coach, teacher, and Director of Physical Education, OkmulgeeHigh School. In 1954, he also became Dean of Boys. He was also a high school principal.

Leland was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
