The application asserts that he enlisted in 1862 at Houston, Mississippi, was never discharged and was in in active service at surrender in 1865. His commanding officer was Capt. John D. Smith.

James McDowell appears as a private on the roster of the Chickasaw Guards, Company H, 11th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry Volunteers, CSA. This record indicates that he was "transferred to cavalry". This may account for the discrepancy regarding his date of enlistment. The National Parks Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Database, confirms that he was a private in Company E, 8th Mississippi Cavalry.
