Goodspeed's indicates that Henry's parents married in Chester district, South Carolina, and resided there until moving to Chickasaw County, Mississippi. Goodspeed's also indicates that Henry was a member of the Eighteenth Mississippi Beauregarde's Rifles and was killed during the last 7 days of battle at Richmond, Virginia, June, 1864. The National Parks Service Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Database confirms Henry M. McDowell was a private in Company I, 18th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, CSA. Other sources indicate that Company I was known as the "Beauregard Rifles of Madison County".
