Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition/Disposition of Land in Augusta County, VA:

• Page 97-100. 2 April 1745. Indenture between James Patton and John Lewis, both of County of Augusta and James Lockridge of same.. for five shillings.. granted land in Augusta County, lying on the Great River of the Calf Pasture, containing 280 acres.. beginning.. east side of the river on steep bank.. Robert Bratton's line.. John Graham's line... (signed) James Patton (seal), John Lewis (seal). Witnesses: James Carter, Robert (B) Bratton, Robt. Crockett. Paid sum of £9.06.11½.. release acknowledged. Recorded Orange County 20 July 1745. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 10, Dorman, pg. 39].

• James Lockridge acquired 280 acres in the Calfpasture (listed above), which was subsequently sold to his son, Andrew Lockridge, in 1764.

• Page 251.--21st June, 1763. James Lockridge and Isabella ( ) to Moses McElvain, £60, on Great River, Calf Pasture between said Lockridges and Robert Givens' lands, 260 acres. Teste: Samuel Hodge. Delivered: Moses McElvain, April, 1770.

Donna, Pages 1, 272 and 498 of Robert Walters' book has the following: James Lockridge I born 1695ca Northern Ireland? Scotland? married 1722 Isabella Kinkead daughter of David Kinkead. James died after 1764. Children: 1. James II born ca 1723, married 1747 ca. Isabella Weems died after 1790 Abbeville Co., SC 2. Robert I born ca 1725 , married ca 1748 Rebecca ____, died Oct 1809 Woodford Co., KY 3. Margaret born ca 1727, Northern Ireland?, married ca 1744 Augusta Co. VA to Robert Gay I, died 1785 Augusta Co., VA. 4. Andrew Lockridge I, born 10 Apr. 1730, married 17 Apr. 1762 Augusta Co., VA, Jane "Jean" Graham, died 15 March, 1791 Augusta Co., VA, buried at Andrew Lockridge home place Highland Co., VA.

Page 272 lists Sarah Lockridge and John Gay children the Robert Gay listed was their child born 25 Jun 1776.

Page 498 Lists descendants of Margaret Lockridge Gay. Robert Gay was son of William Gay I and Margaret Hamilton. On 17 July 1745 Robert acquired Lot #9 from Col. James Patton and John Lewis, 519 acres on both sides of the Great River in the Calf Pasture.. In 1746 Robert purchased Lot #23 from James Carter. 17 Feb 1762 Robert Gay's estate given bond Augusta Co. Will book 3 page 110. Children: James born 1745 died 1813 married twice.1. Elizabeth McKittrick, 2. Abigail Simpson Robert born Augusta Co. VA 1755 died 20 Dec. 1824 Gallia Co. OH married Rebecca Lockridge daughter of Robert Lockridge I of Augusta Co. marriage bond 18 Nov 1788 Page 502 James gave lot # 9 to his brothers Robert and John. As oldest son James inherited the land.Gave it to brothers in 1773.

26 iii. Margaret Lockridge was born in Virginia ca 1727. She married Robert Gay ca 1746. Robert died 1785 Augusta Co., VA. 

+ 11 iv. Andrew Lockridge was born April 10, 1730. 

27 v. Elizabeth Lockridge was born ca 1740. Elizabeth died January 25, 1832 in Lowell, Summers Co., VA (now WV), at 91 years of age. She married twice. She married Robert Graham Augusta Co., VA, June 24, 1763. She married Samuel Gwin 1775. 

28. Isabella3 Kincaid (David4) birth date unknown.

She married James Lockridge circa 1729. James was born in Ireland circa 1708. James died after 1790 in Abbeville Co., SC. James became the father of James Lockridge in Virginia, ca 1723.
