James Robertson Johnston was the son of Zachariah Johnston and Ann Robertson. He was most likely born at his grandfather's home the Stone Fort or Barrens, then inherited and owned by his father. He married Esther Turk (1770 to 1845), the daughter of Thomas Turk and Mary Glaves, on 19 Dec 1786 in Augusta Co., VA.
