James Robert Henderson served in the Civil War, Company A, 14th Illinois Calvary as a Private. He sustained a gunshot wound through his left lung which shortened his life. He was pensioned and homesteaded in Mercer County, Missouri, Lindley Township, on the Missouri-Iowa state line. (Jerry Jones)

    Husband of Malinda Jane (Benson) Henderson (1818-1909). They were married on March 21, 1839 in Knox County, Illinois and had at least eight children together including: Francis Marion "Frank," George, H., John W., Charles Edward, Ahira T. "Hisey," Eliza Belle, Mary Ann and Samuel Douglas Henderson. James was the son of Robert Henderson and Martha Ducket (Wheeler) Henderson of Virginia.

    James was a Veteran of the Union Army in the Civil War. He served from 1864-1865 in Co. A, 14th Illinois Cavalry. Notes from widow's pension records say he died of small pox in 1881.
