He farmed in Howick Twp on Crown Deed land he had bought from his uncle John Virtue. In 1881 he sold the farm to his brother Henry and then bought the home farm of his parents in Darlington Twp. This farm at the time was leased to John Niddery. He operated hotels in Myrtel and Brukton. He also ran a store in Enfield. His hobby was oil painting. He always had a smart team and carriage.
