James Forsey's origins are unknown. His first sighting is in 1725 when he was married at Thorncombe (then in Devon, now Dorset) to Joan Sprake. They then moved to the neighbouring parish of Winsham, over the county boundary into Somerset, where they had three children baptised between 1726 and 1730. James has yet to be traced after 1730, although it is implied that he was still alive in 1769 when Joan died, as she was described on her burial as "wife of James" rather than widow.
