James Emerson, … commonly said to have returned to England, 1653. There is no proof that he came to America. Res. England. … baptized at Bishop's Stortford, 16 February, 1617-18, is mentioned in his father's will at Ipswich in 1653 and 1660: "If he shall come over into this country (or send by a certain certificate of his being living)." He is identified by Dr. Emerson with a lieut. col. Emerson, whose will was proved at Tangiers, 1664. The latter James left a wife, Lydia, and talks of his nephew, Mr. Roberts, of Bishop's Stortford, which makes the above identification probable and suggests the possibility that his wife's name was Roberts. This James had a daughter, Lydia, who married (by license) 13 January, 1669-70, J. Stubbings, citizen of London.
