On his father, William Cathcart's, death in 1797 James inherited his father's land which was adjacent to James McClure's land. About this time or shortly after he married his neighbor's daughter, Isabel McClure.

During the War of 1812 he served in Capt. John Graham's Company of Infamtry, 2nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia frSeptember 5, 1814 to September 14, 1814.

Seven months later in April of 1815 when making his will he was "very sick in body" and died the following month at the age of 43. One wonders if his death was related to his extreemly short military service of only nine days.

Isabel last appears in the Census of 1830. (The census shows her as "Isabella Kithcart" as Cathcart was sometimes spelled).
