James Burrows was baptised on 27th July 1794 at Blatherwycke in Northamptonshire, son of William Burrows and his wife Sarah.

James's next sighting is on 18th May 1824, aged 29, when he married Elizabeth Allen at Barnack, a few miles north-east of Blatherwycke. They went on to have five children at Barnack between 1825 and 1832, although three of them died young.

Elizabeth died aged 36 in 1834.

The following year, James remarried a widow named Rose Downes (formerly Newborn). The 1841 census finds them living at Barnack with one of James's surviving children and with his late wife's father.

On census night in 1851, James was on his own in Barnack, described as a cottager of six acres. Rose was away from home that night, being with her son and his family, who had recently had a baby, at the nearby village of Collyweston.

The 1861 census finds James and Rose in Barnack, with James described as an almsman, presumably claiming some sort of charitable assistance.

Rose died in 1862, aged 77, leaving James a widower for a second time. He lived to be 86 and died in 1880 at the Stamford Union Workhouse, which was just outside the town in the parish of Stamford Baron. He was buried back in Barnack on 30th September 1880.
