Facts and Events
Went to Hamilton, Canada when he was 21 yrs old, and was a sailor on the Great Lakes, his vessel plying between Quebec and Chicago. At the time of his marriage in 1862 he was living at Limerick, north of Belleville, Ontario. He was a member of the Thanet Presbyterian Church, Hastings County, Ontario. In January 1870, moved with the Hepburn family to Independence Missouri and farmed land near Gaynor, next to the Hepburn property. In 1904 they shifted to nearby Hopkins, Missouri. His obituary said, in part, " Though not unexpected, yet it was with a deep sense of sorrow and with a sigh of regret that the people of this community learned of the death of their well known and highly esteemed citizen and neighbour. He had been failing in health, at time dangerously ill for some months past.."
1881 Census James (age 50, farmer) and Margaret H. (age 36) are shown living with Thomas Hepburn in Independence, Nodaway, Missouri along with a large family of Hepburn (Hepborn in census). A younger son Richard Hepborn shown born in Canada, Daughter in law born in Canada of Irish parents, but 7 year old grand child born in Missouri. |
