James Thomas was born in Hertford County NC approx 1863 according to his marriage date of 30 dec 1896 and his listed age of 33. Also, on the 1900 Census, he lists his birthdate as Oct 1863. His Father's name is listed as James Britt, but there is no Mother listed on his license. The place listed as marriage location is Southampton County VA at Mrs. Samuel Hill's.

Further investigation leads to the possibility that James T. Sr is buried in the Hill Family Cemetary located south of Boykins VA, on VA state road 743, 4/10 miles north of the NC State line on the west side of the road, although he is not listed on the Hill Cemetary list provided by the Courtland VA Branch Library. This list does include his wife Bettie, and the logical conclusion is that he is also buried there since the Hill Cemetary is listed as his place of burial on his death certificate, information for which was provided by his son, James T. Jr..

James Thomas Died on June 26, 1935 (Death Cert # 15822), in Boykins, VA, of Bright's Disease, which is now referred to as acute or chronic nepritis(severe kidney disease). The term "Bright's Disease" is retained in medical jargon in honor of English physician Richard Bright. One well known person to die from this cause was Emily Dickinson, noted poet. Also among noted victims were Chester Arthur, the 21st U.S. President, and First Ladies Roosevelt and Wilson.

According to the 1900 US Census, James T. was living in Nowsoms, VA with his wife Betttie A. (Hill) and his son Normal Hill Britt (age 1) The Census also include the information that Bettie had 2 children, and one died. No information on that child is available as of Oct 2007.

The 1910 Census lists him as living on Newsoms Road in Newsoms with Bettie and Norman (age 12) andadditional sons James Thomas Jr (9) and Linwood (7). Further information on that census says that Bettie had 6 children and 3 died. No further information is available on those children as of Oct 2007. This census also lists this family as living on Newsom Road, family #413, the Charlie Drake family as #411, and the Sam Hill family as #412, possibly living in the same house, now owned by the Drake family and used as a farm, with the house in major disrepair as of 2007. This is the same location as the above Hill Cemetary.
