- ↑ NEHGR, p. 75:144, says James was baptized Feb 1644. Source:Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States. Records of the First Church at Dorchester in New England, 1636-1734, p. 156, publ. 1891, shows the baptism of Samuell Bird "2 Mo : 44" [so April, not February], and interlined over Samuel is the notation "(or James)". Savage (publ. 1860) (1:182) gives only years, 1644 and 1647 for Samuel and James, apparently estimates based on Samuel "bapt. that year [1644]", and "Thomas Bird and His Descendants", NEHGR, p. 25:21-2 (1871), says Samuel bap. April 1644, James, b. about 1647. Neither shows any other information for Samuel, nor is he mentioned in the 1667 will of the father Thomas (NEHGR 16:161). So depending on the provenance of the notation mentioned, which is unknown (or further evidence being presented), it is possible there never was a son Samuel and it was James born in 1644, or this could have been added after the fact, the assumption of 1800's researcher, wondering who was Samuel and why isn't James' baptism found, and thus written into the records book?
