    ... Jacob Tipton was the son of Col. John Tipton from Shenandoah County, Virginia, 1776-1777, and representative from Washington, North Carolina (now Tennessee) in 1784. His home in Shenandoah was near Maurertown. He married (1) Mary, daughter of Thomas Butler, by whom he had 9 children. (Wayland's History of Shenandoah County, Virginia, p. 653) Captain Jacob Tipton, born 1765, was killed November 4, 1791, at St. Clair's defeat while fighting the Indians. He is said to have called out to his wife as he rode away to war to change the name of his infant son, William, to Jacob in the event of his death. (Ramsay's Annals of Tennessee, p. 553) This was done, and his son, Jacob, became a General, for whom the county of Tipton was named in 1821. ...
