Introducing Jacob Loesch/Lash, "The Immigrant" of Hess, Germany near Nuremburg____

Jacob Lash I was born in 1723 near Hess, Germany, (Prussia) a small town 60 miles from Berlin, deserted the German army and came to America in 1740, arriving at Philadelphia; he settled in New Jersey and married. This information was included in a letter to me dated 1981 from Virginia Mencer. From a letter dated 1976 the following was speculated: Jacob Lash came with two brothers from Prussia to Philadelphia in 1740. He went to Newton, Sussex Co, NJ and his brothers went to Ohio and North Carolina. Jacob lived in Mifflin Co, PA for a time and had either 8 or 10 children - Jacob, Philip, Peter, Abraham, Isaac, David, Barbara Shay, Kate Ault, and possibly John and Phoebe.

New Jersey in 1793: An Abstract and Index to the 1793 Militia Census of the State of New Jersey, James S. Norton, Salt Lake City, 1973

On 30 Nov 1792 a law was passed in the New Jersey State Legislature which was aimed at the reorganization of the New Jersey State Militia. One of the first requirements of the law was to have a statewide census taken of all eligible males between the ages oof 18 and 45. This work is an attempt to replace the destroyed 1790 NJ Federal Census.
