April 14, 1932 JAKE HOOVER, 60, prominent stockman of Mansfield, committed suicide Sunday evening about 8:00 by drowning himself in a cistern in his feedlot at Mansfield. The discovery was made by his son, Ted. Mr. Hoover left the house at 7:30, saying he was going to town. His hat, coat and shoes were found by the cistern top. Coroner Stelle said it was a clear case of suicide and no inquest was held. Ill health was given as the cause of the tragedy. He had been suffering from a bone infection in one foot, and had recently been treated at Mayo's. He had 4 daughters and a son.


HOOVER-- Jacob Judge Hoover and Ella Nora Odom were married May 27, 1894 in Seymour, MO. Shortly after they were married, they moved to the Flat Rock School area just south of Mansfield in Wright County. In 1911 they bought a house and livestock barns one block north of what is now the Mansfield public square. Jacob "Jake" was a livestock dealer and Ella ran a boarding house within their home.

         Jake and Ella had eight children.  They were: Opal Lee (1896) married Ray Riley from the Mansfield area and they had one son, John; Mabel Eliza (1897) married James Langley from Pierce City, MO; Ruth Thelma (1898) married Cecil Brazeal of Mansfield and they had one son William and two daughters Georgeanna and Jean; later Ruth married Ernest Parker of Salinas, CA; Jessie Lue Anne (1903) married Horace E. Cantrell from the Hartville area, had two daughters Nadine and Marilyn; Herbert (1908-1911); Rachel Pauline (1912) married Hubert Dennis of Mansfield and they had a son Bobby and a daughter Patricia; Ted (1916) married Wanda Moody of Mansfield and had three sons Jakie "Jake", Ernest "Ernie" and David;  Dorothy Sue (1919) married Paul Harris of Mt. Grove and they had one son Wallace.  Dorothy Sue later married James Spurlock of Memphis, TN,  Of the eight children that Jacob and Ella had, Ted was the only one to make Mansfield his lifelong home.  He was born in and lived his entire life in the house his parents had bought in Mansfield in 1911.  He worked as a mechanic most of his life and served his country in the U. S. Army during W W II.  Everyone know that when a vehicle was brought to Ted, it would be fixed.  Ted and Wanda's sons all married Wright County residents.  Jake married Linda Edwards in 1972; Ernie married Connie Edwards in 1975; and David married Lori VanHook in 1984,  David and Lori have one daughter Paige Nicole, born May 13, 1989.  All three families still reside in Wright County.
          David, with the help of his brothers, restored the family home in Mansfield in 1993.  His daughter Paige is the fourth generation of the Hoover family to live in the home.                                          Submitted by Linda Edwards Hoover
