Diane,

Here is what I have in my database.

Jacob had two wives (both named Elizabeth).

Jesse (b. 2 Aug 1810) was from Jacob's first wife Elizabeth Peters.

I don't have a Josiah listed (but do have a George, Jacob (who stayed in PA) and a John).

Does the birth date for Jesse match what you have?

Diane,

Thanks for calling today, and for sending the photos of the Hartzell house. They were really huge, and it caused my email program to shut down when I tried to look at them. I was able to reduce them in size by half, and then by half again, so they are now only about 100 kb each. Is there any way you can reduce your photos before you send them?

The book that I have a photocopy of is called "A Brief History of a Branch of the Hartzell Family" by Rev. George P. Hartzell, Summum, Illinois, 1900. He was the son of Jacob Hartzell Jr., who was the son of Jacob Hartzell Sr., who was the son of Johann George Hartzell the patriarch.

Chapter I

"George Hartzell."

"In the year 1770, six years before the Declaration of Independence, a young man about 21 years of age removed from Northampton county to York county, Pennsylvania. In 1800, by an act of the legislature of the state, Adams county was established out of the western portion of York county, and from that time on our ancestor lived in the latter county. [Johann] George Hartzell therefore forms the connecting link between those of the same name who came from Switzerland, and the generations that succeeded him. From him have scended all to whom reference will be made in this narrative bearing his name. He was the great grandfather of the writer and the first in order, of six generations in this one, of six divergent lines.

"At the same time there came also others from the eastern counties and settled in the same community or rather formed a community:-- the Rices, Peters, Slaybaughs, Benders, Wiedners, and other, some of whose names will be referred to later. George Hartzell as represented to me long ago by one who often saw him, was a large, muscular man. He felled heavy timber, which then stood in forests, and manufactured it into lumber on a sawmill erected by himself on 'Possum Creek' which runs through the farm he possessed. Of my great grand-mother Hartzell I have no information." Chapter II

"Jacob Hartzell."

"In these lines of descent from the paternal head, as already stated, there is one of six that enters into the history of our line and stands prominently first. This my grand-father, was from a description given me of him, a large man of lively disposition. I never saw him. He was married to a daughter of Henry Peters, living on a farm adjoining his father's. To them were born four children: Jesse, Anna Mary, George and Jacob. Shortly after the birth of the youngest child the mother died. After a few years had elapsed the father was married the second time. The maiden name of this second wife is unknown to me.

"About this time, 1825, there was quite a 'westward tide.' Ohio was being settled up rapidly. It had been admitted to statehood in 1802. There were inducements held out to young men to immigrate thither. There were no railroads then and all traveling and moving had to be done with wagons. Ohio was looked upon then as the 'back woods,' and anyone going there could not at that time have any hope of ever returning. I remember hearing an aged aunt tell how her brother John went to Ohio, and became homesick, and that he used to go to the highest elevation he could find, and look Eastward, towards home, but 'poor Johnny could never go back!' Now, if he were yet living, he could board the train in the evening and by next morning take breakfast at his old home. Three fourths of a century have passed since then and O, what changes have been wrought! "Jacob Hartzell with his family excepting the youngest also emigrated to Ohio, locating near the present city of Canton. Nothing further is known to the writer concerning his grand-father's future, except that he had a large family and the he died in Ohio."

Chapter III

"Jesse and Anna Mary Hartzell"

"These two children as stated, went with their father and step-mother to Ohio. They were quite young, and very little of their history is known to the writer. A brief paragraph is all that can be given each of these:

"Jesse, the elder, so is the impression of the writer, was never married and died young.

"Anna Mary was married to a man by the name of Brady. There were several children born to them, who are living in Ohio and Indiana. I cannot give their names. The parents are dead. Thus it is that people closely connected by ties of blood are widely separated and unacquainted."

Chapter IV

"George Hartzell" [third child of Jacob Hartzell and Miss Peters]

"The subject of this chapter, as already noticed, also accompanied his father to Ohio. When a small boy I used to hear relatives speak about my uncle George, my father's brother--my only living paternal uncle. He was married to a lady by the name of Myers, I think. They lived at Canton, Ohio, many years and for a time in Noble county, Indiana. At present he is a resident of Canton. For a good while we had kept up an occasional correspondence. In all that time I desired to see him. This desire was gratified when in June 1891, passing through the city of Canton, I stopped between trains to pay him a brief visit. I found him at home in the garb of a farmer, a thin, wiry old man of good stature. A strange feeling came over me as I shook hands with him, after I had introduced myself as his brother Jacob's son. He was glad to see me and invited me to remain for supper--indeed wished me to tarry over night. I have often wished that I had made my stay longer. He told me that he was 11 years old when he came with his father, near to where Canton now is. "'Then,' he said, 'the wolves, bears and Indians were plenty.' The country was largely a wilderness. He could remember how, when a boy, he used to fish in 'Possum creek' near his grand-father's; also spoke of the 'saw mill,' and of the 'water trough,' near his father's house, back in Pennsylvania. He said he was sorry that I did not come to visit him while aunt was yet living, who had died about a year before. He is a well preserved man, and told me he 'could outwork' some of the younger fellows. He was born in Adams county, Pa., Nov. 11, 1814, and was therefore on Nov. 11, 1899, 85 years of age. The last letter received from him was dated Nov. 7th last, the day before the election. He hoped he would be able to go to the polls, stating he would 'rather walk ten miles than lose his vote.' He never had any children of his own, but raised a number of orphan children. He said, 'I gave them a good schooling and then told them to work their own way.'

"Uncle George in his younger years was a fuller by trade, also did some farming, and at present owns a small farm near Canton. In his old age he can still find some work, and he is not afraid of it either."

Chapter V.

"Jacob Hartzell" [fourth child of Jacob Hartzell and Miss Peters, and the author's father]

"This chapter is to me a sad one, because it brings up memories of the past frought with affliction, death, sorrow and tears. And yet in it all there can be seen the leadings of a kind Providence. "Jacob Hartzell, son of Jacob, was born in Adams county, Pa., April 17, 1816. He died Feb. 15, 1849, aged 32 years, 9 months, and 28 days. As stated before, his mother died when he was an infant. Indeed he was but a week old when deprived of his mother. His maiden aunts Polly and Julia [Peters] took him and raised him. They would not give him up, so he remained in Adams county, Pa. He learned the shoemaker trade when he had become of a proper age, at which he worked a number of years. About the year 1843 he was joined in holy wedlock with Catherine, daughter of Peter Rice, of Bendersville, Pa. Her mother's maiden name was Bear. She was born near what is now Bonneauville, Adams county, Pa. There were three sons [her brothers], viz: John B., Peter B. and Henry B. The mother died when 'Katie' as she was called was about 12 years of age. The sons after they had grown to be young men, went west to Indiana, where they prospered. Some of their descendants still live in that state, while others have gone elsewhere. Dr. E.V. Rice, son of Peter B. Rice, is a practicing physician at Orangeville, Ill. E.C. Rice, son of John B., is an M.D., and Edward, a nephew of Dr. E.V. Rice, is also a disciple of Aesculapius.'

"Katie remained at home till the time of her marriage, and for a dozen years proved a very efficient help to her step-mother in caring for the oldest of her step-brothers and -sisters. My grandfather Rice chose as his second wife Miss Elizabeth Plank. As a result of this union there were eight children, 5 sons and 3 daughters, respectively, as nearly as I can remember..."

"Grandfather Rice departed this life about the year 1861, aged about 65 years. He was noted for his upright, christian character, and was one of the pillars of the Reformed congregation at Bendersville, Pa., from the time of its organization, about 1845.

"But bereavement came with heavy tread in less than a dozen years after our parents' marriage. Never of very strong constitution, Jacob Hartzell began to fail and lingered for some years till finally death came to his relief. He died quite young. A young wife with three orphan children the eldest, the writer, being a little past 4 years of age, must now face the difficulties of life alone! Good homes were secured for the two eldest ones and the youngest she kep with her, earning a living for some 8 years by doing housework at a meagre sum per week. This continued till 1857, when she married Mr. Samuel Smith, who proved a good, kind, step-father, with whom she lived till his death March 5, 1875, aged 71 years. Of this union there were three children of whom one remains. She was a good Christian mother. Although separated from her quite young, and having the opportunity of seeing her but a few times in a year, her kind words of counsel, and her simple faith, and pious life impressed themselves indelibly upon the hearts of her young children. And these impressions never lost their force in after years. She used to tell us children how when a girl she walked a distance of five miles to attend Catechising, at the then nearest Reformed church. Having a naturally strong constitution, and a sanguine temperament, she was fitted to endure the trials of her future earthly life. She lived 43 years after the death of father. The latter part of these she suffered much from rheumatic pains. Her death occurred Sept. 15, 1892, aged 76 years. Her body rests in the burying ground connected with the Chestnut Grove Lutheran Church, near Latimore, Adams county, Pa., of which church she was in her latter years a member.

"Her children rise up and call her blessed."

"I can remember very little about my father. I have a faint recollection of him as a tall pale faced man. I remember the concluding part of his little table prayer. I know, too, that I looked into his open grave, supported by strong arms. Mother used to tell how earnestly the minister prayed for the widow and orphan children. That prayer was answered! Father's remains lie buried at Bendersville, and a humble marble slab marks his grave."

The book goes on to give much more detail about the author and his siblings. His brother Elijah Jacob Hartzell was my ancestor. He died when he was 39. His wife was Almira Fisk Haskell, whose brother brother Harrison married a Peters and whose sister Amanda married a Peters (brother and sister to each other). George and Elijah's grandfather Peter Rice (Reese, Rhys) had a bunch of siblings, three of whom married into the Peters family. There was also a lot of intermarriage with the Slaybaughs (Schlebachs), Crumbs (Crums), and Planks (Blanks). These families were all part of the Bendersville community. Family reunions must have been a mess.

I have discovered the identity of my Jacob Jr.'s and your Jesse's mother. She was Elisabeth Peters, born 1791 in Menallen Twp., Adams Co., PA, died April 1816 (which was when Jacob Jr. was born). Her parents were Henry (Heinrich) Peters, born 1764, died 1846, and Lisabeth Unknown, born 1768. Elisabeth's siblings were Johannes, Maria Machtalena, Hanna, Henry (Heinrich), Jacob (probably died in infancy), Maria (Polly), Sarah, Solomon, Julia, Daniel, Jacob. You see she had sisters named Polly and Julia, which would have been the maiden aunts that raised Jacob Jr. after she died.

I believe Henry (Heinrich) Peters' father was Jacob Zeppenfeldt Peters (born 1717 in Switzerland, died 1788 in Northampton Co., PA), and his mother was Elizabeth Unknown. Henry had at least one sibling, John Ulrich Peters, who married Catherine Schlebach and whose three daughters married the three Rice brothers (above).

Here's my line: Elijah Jacob Hartzell married Almira Fisk Haskell (whose line goes back to the Pilgrims!). They had Harry, Lidie, and Delia Hartzell. Lidie was my great grandmother. She married Charles Wolfe of Cumberland Co., PA, and they lived in Camp Hill. They had Marian, Claire, Erma, Faye, Charles, Helen, Marlin, and Robert Wolfe (who died at 28 in the Battle of the Bulge). Marian was my grandmother. She married Lester Simmons of Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., and they had Lorna and Sandra Simmons, who is my mother. Sandra married Larry Swarr, and they had Virginia (me), Christine, and David Swarr.

When my mother was a child they often went to the Peters reunion every summer. Elijah Jacob Hartzell's brother-in-law John Peters had an orchard in Uriah or somewhere in Cumberland Co., and they would host a reunion. When I was a child we still received gifts of apples and pears from them, but I had no idea who the Peters family were or why they sent them. Apparently these reunions are still held every summer. I'd love to go sometime!

Hope this information helps you. Let me know if you need anything else.

Diane,

You did tell me in the email that the photo was of Otis. Nice picture!

It sure seems as though your Jesse Hertsel must be our Jesse Hartzell. Just because the author of the book thinks he died young doesn't mean anything. The PA side of the family really lost touch with the branch that went west, it seems.

Where did you get the 1817 birthdate, do you remember? That might help you to narrow it down.

I'm glad you found the info interesting, if not exactly helpful. I wish every family had a biography written about it. It makes me think I should write some things down for any children or grandchildren who decide to look into their family trees.

WoW! That is a lot of information … I spent quite a while trying to sort this out and got about half way through it … I really do appreciate you sending this to me … If you have more info you can bet that it will be welcomed by me anytime …

I am still trying to get the info on Mary Ann Triplett … I don’t think I got it from you the last time you sent it so would you please send it again? ….

I have a question about Jesse Hertsel’s age at death … When I went to the gravesite the stone read his death age at 47 years of age and he died in 1864 that coincides with his birth year as being 1817 … I did go to the Columbia City library to find his obituary but was unsuccessful … I think we will have to find some other records to verify Jesse’s birth date … This is very interesting to me ..Thank you again for the info … Dave

Diane,

I am sorry to be so slow in responding to your e-mail. My husband and I went to the Smokey Moutains last week, and while there I slipped on a small hill (nothing as spectacular as falling down the mountain, I am afraid) and my foot slid under a tree root. My ankle bent under me and snapped. So, I am now in a bit of a pickle. I had to have surgery but we drove home to Crown Point, IN that same night because I work for an orthopedic surgeon and now am on the mend. More than you wanted to know, but I just wanted to share my expericence. Ha!

My sister, Vicky Tallent and I have shared our family info. with Michael Cummings in the past. Here is what I can get to from my chair for the time being.

My mother, Kathleen Lucille Rider is the dau. of James Edward Rider and Hazel Jennie Steel.

James Edward Rider is the son of John William Rider and Harriet Amelia Miller.

John William Rider is the son of Samuel Rider and Henrietta Matzabaughe John was born in Stark Co.,OH 18 Aug 1864.

Samuel Rider married Henrietta Matzabaugher in Stark Co.,OH 19 Nov. 1863 Mg. Bk. 5, pg. 597. They were in Noble Co.,IN by 1870 census.

Samuel Rider is the son of John Rider and Sarah Ann Hartzell. Samuel was born 11 June 1839 in Stark Co.,OH.

John Rider married Sarah Ann Hartzell in Stark Co.,OH 12 Feb 1836 Mg. Bk. B-33, pg. 327

John Rider is the son of William Rider (Reiter) and Hannah Bordner. I believe William and Hannah were married ca1797 in PA but have no other info. on that.

William Rider (Reiter) was born 14 May 1772 in VA or PA... not sure on the place of birth. He died in Holmes Co.,OH 12 Sept 1854. Hannah was born ca1773, Berks Co.,PA and died 30 Jan 1853 in Tuscawarus Co.,OH. Both William and Hannah are buried at Shanesville First Reformed Cemetery, Sugar Creek Twp.,Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

Going back to Sarah Ann Hartzell:

Sarah Ann Hartzell was born 7 April 1820 York Co., PA. She died 10 Nov 1872 in Whitley Co.,IN and is buried at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Kosciusko Co.,IN.

She is the dau. of Jacob Hartzell and Elizabeth Leather(s) I don't have a date of marriage for Jacob and Elizabeth.

Jacob was married first to an Elizabeth 'Betsy' Peters in ca1810 PA. possibly Adams Co. I have 4 children for them. He then married Elizabeth Leather.

Elizabeth Leather married 2nd after Jacob Hartzell died, Samuel Pence.22 Feb 1829 Stark Co.,OH. She was born ca June 1784 PA and died 14 oct 1851 Stark Co.,OH She is buried at the Sherman Church Cemeteru, Bethlehem Co.,Stark Co.,OH. I have 5 children for Elizabeth Leather and Jacob Hartzell.

Samuel Pence moved to Noble Co.,IN and settled in Ligonier, IN where he died. To my knowledge, Elizabeth and Samuel did not have children together.

Elizabeth Leather was the daughter of John Leather and Mary Bechtel. John Leather was born ca1758 in York Co.,PA and died July-Aug. 1831, Dover Twp., York Co.,PA. Mary Bechtel was born 7 Aug 1762 Manheim Twp., York Co.,PA. and died ca 1845 York Co.,PA. I have 7 children for them.

John Leather was the son of Frederick Leather. I don't have a wife's name for him. I belive John Leather had a brother Jacob Leather and a sister of whom I don't have a name of but she also married a Hartzell.

Mary Bechtel was the daughter of Christian Bechtel and a wife I don't have a name of.

I don't have any further information on the Bechtel line. ____

Now: I am reading your e-mail and here is what I can add that I have in my own files.

Jacob Hartzell: the name I am finding ican be spelled numerous ways, as I am sure you knoe.: spelled as Hartzell ; Hartsel ; and possiby Hertzell

I have him as the son of John George Hartzel and Hannah Philitz Kreiling. John George Hertzel (the spelling changes) was born 8 Feb 1747/1748 and died 3 Nov 1824 Menallen Twp., Adams Co.,PA. He is buried at Benders Church Cemetery, Adams Co.,PA.

Hannah Philitz Kreiling - the only thing I have on her is a date of death as: 2 Feb 1830. She is buried at Benders Church Cemetery, Adams Co.,PA.

I have 15 children for them.

John George Hartzel was the son of Hans George Hartzel and Catharina Schmetzer. I don't have any further info. on John George Hartzel or Catharina Schmetzer other than baptismal records on some of their children:

Christ Union Church-Known as Lower Saucon Church Lower Saucon township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania 1756-1845 Translated from German by Rev. William J. Hinke, Ph.D, D.D. Professor of Semitic Languares and Religions in The Auburn Theological Seminary, Auburn, New York 1921, Page 5,

I have Hans George Hartzel as the son of Hans Jerg Hartzel and Margretha Conrad. I have no other information on them. That seems to be as far back as I have either researched or entered info. into the computer.

____

Now, back to your e-mail:

Jacob Hartzell and his 1st wife, Elizabeth Peters had the following children:

Jesse Hartzel - born 2 Aug 1810 - PA Anna Mary Hartzell - born 1 Dec 1812 - PA George Hartzell - born 14 Nov 1814 Adams Co.,PA Jacob Hartzell - 11 April 1816 Adams Co.,PA

Jacob Hartzell and 2nd wife: Elizabeth Leather had the following children:

Elizabeth Hartzell - ca 3 Jan 1822 Adams Co.,PA John Hartzell - 17 March 1820 Adams Co.,PA Sarah Ann Hartzell - 7 April 1817 York or Adams Co.,PA Hannah Hartzell - 26 June 1824 OH

According to the headstone inscription for John Hartzel he died 18 Dec 1883 at the age of 63 yrs. 9mos., 11 days which calculated him being born 17 March 1820.

Sarah Ann Hartzel who md. John Rider - I have as being born 7 April 1820 - so one of their birth years is off. Her headstone gives her date of death as 10 Nov 1872, age 55 yrs. 7 mos. 3 days which calculates to 7 April 1817. I rather think that date of birth is the more accurate.

Now, the Rider, Hartzel, Eversole, and other families were of the United Bretheran religion and they moved from Ohio to Indiana to spread their religious word.

I believe there may be a connection to the Jesse Hartzel who is in Whitley Co.,IN as well but have as yet not researched that area.

As it happens, my husband's aunt is Orpha Parkison. She was the daughter of Ratio Ted Smith and Callie Hertsel. (all of Whitley Co.,IN).

Callie Hertsel was the daughter of Russell L. Hertsel and Orpha Tyler.

I don't know who Russell is the son of as I have yet to get into tha
