When he registered for the draft during the Civil War, he was a clergyman living in Harmony, Warren County, N.J.

At the time of the 1870 census, the 47-year-old NJ native was living in Haverstraw, NY, with his 40-year-old wife, who was born in New York.

The application for probate of his will [1892?] lists Elizabeth C. Cole of Newark as his widow, and brothers David, of Birmingham, Conn[ecticut Farms?]; John of Bloomfield, NJ; and Morgan of Montclair, NJ.

Upon his death, he left his house to the Newark Methodist Conference, although his widow could continue to reside in it until her death.

His obituary in the Minutes of the Twenty-Fifth Session of Newark Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, written by C.S. Woodruff, gives the following information:

He was born in Arlington, N.J., November 4, 1820. His father died when he was two, leaving eight children. His mother died when he was six. He lived with an elder sister until age 11, when he went to live with a stranger. He joined the church at Belleville, N.J. In 1851 he was appointed junior preacher in the Madison Circuit. in 1852 he was received into the New Jersey circuit and sent as junior preacher to Wantage. In March 1853 he married Elizabeth Clark. With her he went to California to do mission work. He returned after a few years because of ill-health of himself and his wife and he was assigned to Walpack. In 1884, he went to Westtown, NY, for a few years, and then settled in Newark, NJ, where he died. His funeral was held in the Woodside Presbyterian Church, which was next to his residence. He was buried in Arlington Cemetery, "near his home."

His death certificate</S2>, however, states that he died in Methodist Episcopal Hospital in New York City, and was buried in Fairmount Cemetery, Newark.
