Ira was 45 when he died. His occupation on his death certificate is listed as Truck Driver. He also worked as a handyman and mechanic after being laid off from TCI company (Tennesse Coal & Iron Company), where he worked as a 'car dropper'. He brought the rail cars that were full of coal up out of the mine shafts. 

 He also manufactured and sold bootleg moonshine.    This made him very popular with local as well as federal law enforcement.
