"491—Ichabod Nye (George,171 John,40 Caleb,7 Benjamin1), born at Tolland. Conn., December 21, 1763. When about fifteen years old he went to Hadley, Mass. to learn the tanner's trade. On July 14, 1779, he enlisted in Colonel John Greaton's regiment, Captain Pritchard's company and served nine months, and beginning August 1781, served for three months in Colonel Sears' regiment.
In 1785 he married Minerva, daughter of General Benjamin and Huldah (White) Tupper, of Chesterfield, Mass. He resided in Chesterfield until 1788, when he accompanied General Tupper to Marietta, Ohio, reaching there August 19, 1788. after a journey of ten weeks.
During the Indian wars he lived in Campus Martius, purchasing later the southwest blockhouse which had been the Residence of Governor St. Clair and resided there until 1814. In 1820 he built the dwelling house where he lived the remainder of his life. In 1809 he erected a brick store on Putnam Street the upper story being used by the Masonic lodge of which he was a prominent member. In 1810 he opened a store and engaged in merchandising there and in other places until 1821. He was a federalist in politics and served several years as Town Treasurer and member of the City Council, and as Colonel in the Militia. His wife died April 20, 1836 and he married (2d) August 20, 1839, Rebecca Howe Beebe. Colonel Nye died November 27, 1840."
