Humphrey was born in Charles County, MD, about 1726-1730. He was in the general vicinity of Culpeper, VA, by the mid-late 1750s, He married Margaret Doggett. They had several children. He appears to have had at least six sons.
Humphrey "I" and family moved to the Pittsylvania/Henry County area of VA in the early 1770s. Some members of the family apparently fought at Guilford Courthouse and got some state-related benefits, but no federal pensions.
Humphrey "I" got bounty land in Washington County, TN, in 1783, and sold it about 1801-1804. There is no evidence that he ever actually lived there. He moved to SC in the late 1780s, then to GA in the 1790s.
