Documents show Benedict's wife's name was Huldah, but her surname remained uncertain for years. Now we know, thanks to DNA.

That her surname is Hickox was based on circumstantial evidence -- look at the names of son Ammi's daughters.
1st daughter of son Ammi is Jane Hickok Alford.
5th Daughter of son Ammi is Huldah Ann Alford.

Unfortunately, there are more than one Huldah Hickok or Hickox born about the same time and area in New England. Just recently, however, 4th cousins identified with "high confidence" by DNA discovered that one (myself) is descended from Huldah Hickox and the other from her brother Joseph Hickox. The ancestor we have in common is the mother, Huldah Holmes Hickox, the wife of Benjamin Hickox. So now we have both circumstantial and scientific evidence that we have correctly identified the wife of Benedict Alford.
