His service record from American Civil War Soldiers records that he enlisted as a Private on 01 March 1862 at the age of 22 in Company E, 49th Infantry Regiment North Carolina. He was AWOL from November 1862 to January 1863, marked as sick in March 1863 and May 1864, hospitalized in Petersburg, VA in November 1864, and granted 60 days leave in December 1864. He was paroled on 28 May 1865 at Statesville, NC.
A Hugh M. Morrow's estate papers are in the NC State archives at Raleigh. They mention R. M. Morrow, administrator, J. Albert (Burt) Morrow, Martha J. Lindsey (wife of J.B. Lindsey), H. W. (or H. M/N) Morrow, Robert McCubbins Morrow, Minnie Morrow (now Crawford), minor, Tipton Morrow, minor, John Morrow, minor, Etha or Ethel Morrow, minor.
