Hugh Oliver Lamar married Evelyn Ruth Brewer on June 2, 1929 in Lewisport. They lived for a time in Bowling Green, KY where Hugh was employed by the State Highway Department. They returned to Hawesville in 1929 and went into the retail grocery business. They took over Evelyn's father's store when he became County Judge of Hancock County. Some years later, Hugh shifted to the wholesale grocery business when he bought his father-in-law's business. In 1955, Hugh sold his wholesale grocery business and became a farmer. In 1959, he was elected county tax commissioner of Hancock County for a four year term.
Hugh and Evelyn were the parents of one son, Huston Oliver Lamar. Evelyn died June 26, 1949 and was buried in the Hawesville Cemetery.
Hugh married a second time to Katherine (McCaslin) Lamar on December 22, 1950. Catherine was formerly married to Joseph C. Lamar, son of Howard Lamar. Hugh and Katherine have one daughter, Christine Elaine Lamar, born April 6, 1952.
