Edmund Newman was born on Benoni Smith Lamar's farm in Martindale. This was the same farm where his father was born. In him center the lines of ancestry of several of the old and prominent families in Kentucky.
On the Wroe side of Mary Martha (Stewart) Lamar's family, her ancestors have been traced back to the reign of Egbert, the first King of England. Robert Emery and Mary Martha (Stewart) Lamar named their first son, Edmund Newman Lamar, for Edmund Newman who was a native of England. Edmund Newman was named for Edmund I, the ninth King of England. Edmund Newman Lamar was a descendant of Edmund Newman (see appendix for the lineage).
Edmund Newman received his formal education in the public schools of Hancock County and then attended the Teacher's Normal School at Whitesville, KY. He prepared himself for a teaching career and accepted a teaching position in 1896. He taught successfully for eleven consecutive years, becoming well known in educational circles. He taught at the Campbell School House in Martindale, Utility, and Linton School near Adair. While teaching at Campbell School House and at Utility, he raised a crop each year, on his Grandmother Stewart's farm. Later he farmed at Adair while he was teaching at Linton.
Edmund Newman Lamar was a Republican in politics and in 1909 he was elected County Court Clerk of Hancock county. He moved to Hawesville, in 1909, where he lived the remainder of his life. He was elected County Clerk for four consecutive terms, serving 16 years. In 1924, he was elected County Judge of Hancock county, serving four years, and in 1928, he was elected County Tax Commissioner for Hancock County, serving four years. He also served one term as City Judge of Hawesville. He held public office in Hancock County for 28 years without being rejected by the voters of Hancock county. He established a high reputation for his honesty, sound judgment and impartiality, and discharged his judicial duties in a just and able manner.
Edmund Newman joined the New Chapel Methodist Church in 1893 and was a member of the Hawesville Methodist Episcopal Church from 1910 until his death in 1943 and served 16 years as Superintendent of the Sunday School, Steward and Trustee of the Church. As an appreiation for his many years of faithful service, a beautiful memorial window in the church was dedicated to him.
Edmund Newman Lamar died on Friday, September 24, 1943 at his home in Hawesville, KY after being an invalid for eight years due to diabetes.
October 1943 - Hawesville United Methodist Church,
As you come in the front door of the sanctuary, the first window on the right side was the last window to be dedicated. It remained in place for several years and had not been purchased by anyone.
Edmund Newman Lamar was a very active member of our church and community. Ater his death on September 24, 1943, the congregation, along with the pastor, Reverend H. T. Sharp, decided to donate that window and dedicate it in his honor and memory. This dedication service took place two weeks after his funeral on October 10, 1942.
During World War I, Eddmund Newman served as secretary of the Hancock County Draft board. He was a member of the Modern Woodman of America and at all times was eager to cooperate with his fellowman in efforts for the betterment of his community, county, state and nation.
Edmund Newman Lamar was married to Hallie Fletcher Winkler on December 24, 1901 by Reverend Prine, Paster of the Yelvington Circuit of the Methodist Church. They were married at the residence of her Grandmother Gatewood.
