Kate (Albert) Bachmann claimed that her maternal great-grandfather (i.e., father of Hortense) was a van grooch, sea captain. But Henrietta, sister of Kate, disagreed. There are GROCEs in New Orleans in 1850. New Orleans, LA birth index for her daughter indicates the mother's maiden name was Laura GROSCH. Wedding record of daughter Henrietta names the mother of the bride Henrietta GROCH. Census records of Hortense's children indicate that Hortense was born at sea (supporting the sea captain theory).
