Facts and Events
[edit] BiographyThe New-England Historical and Genealogical Register Volume LV;1901 - Page 48 The first record thus far discovered is in Windham County, Ct. records, that Hope Rogers of Mansfield bought lands of John Waldo, in Windham, June 5, 1713. 100 A. for 115 pounds sterling... One correspondent writes that Hope had four wives and thirteen children, but fails to name any wife except Esther Mecham, or any children except the ten given in Windham records. According to one tradition, he was the only son of Joseph Roger*, who married Sarah Cuvier (or Currier). Shortly after his marriage he joined an expedition to Port Royal, where he was probably killed by the Indians, or French, as he was never heard from afterwards. Hope was so named in hopes of his father's return. The same tradition states that Joseph was one of four brothers who came from England and settled in Salem, Mass. *The assumption that Hope ROGERS' father was a Joseph ROGERS, came about via a descendant attempting to connect to Rev John ROGERS, the martyr (without proof) as seen at the top of the Bible record** of Joel Jackson ROGERS & wife, Sarah Caroline RICE. Research since has uncovered Hope's father as Ichabod. No proof has been found for the "4 wives" or "4 brothers" theory to date. References
