Facts and Events
[edit] About Herman Heinrick VereggeHerman Heinrich Johann Veregge was born 20 June 1795 in Schledehausen, near Osnabruck in Hannover, Germany. He was the son of Balthasar Heinrich Veregge (1770-1811) and Katharina Elisabeth Pottebaum (1771-1837). Herman married Mary Catherine Engel Thunhorst (1799-1867) abt. 1820 in Germany. They had several children together, but many died as infants in Germany, and it appears that only a few of them reached adulthood. In 1848, Herman Heinrick, Catharina, and their two sons Johann Adam and Johann Heinrich Wilhelm departed on the ship "Teresa" from Bremen, Germany, which arrived in Baltimore, Maryland on October 9, 1848. Their destination listed on the ship records was Cincinnati, Ohio, but they ended up making their home in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana. Herman Heinrick and his wife Mary Catherine died a few months apart in 1867 and were both buried in the Lutherania Cemetery in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana. Herman's brother, Johan Frederick Veregge, born in 1798, had family members that also migrated to the Wayne County, Indiana area and left many descendants in that area. They are the ancestors of nearly all of the Veregge descendants that live in America today.
