    Herbert David Whitford, the youngest of the four sons born to Samuel and Sophia Clarke Whitford, was born in Plainfield, N. J., July 9, 1834, and died at the hospital of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Milwaukee, Wis., October 4, 1909.
    He served as a soldier for three years in the 33rd Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War, and later three years in the regular army of the United States. A. W.
