___________________________________________________________ FROM: Oskaloosa Herald, __ Jun 1916.S12 MATTOX.---Born, December 27, 1827; died June 16, 1916. In the death of Brother Henry Mattox we are moved by his advanced age to consider with serious reflections the ever present and continuing fact, that the young may, but the aged must die, and had we now before us a reflex of resignation of mind to this mortal demand, his word of command would have been, Lead on thou spirit of terror, even through the dark shadows of the valley, and chilling waters of death's advance, I am resigned to meet the fatal demand, for on yonder shore, in newness of eternal life, there are outstretched arms and extended hands, to clasp and grasp, a cheer of welcome by the awaiting throng of friends and justified spirits of the Master's realm and kingdom. To this end I'm waiting. In life Brother Mattox made choice of an occupation of toil, in operative masonry. In after life, by choice of association, he came to the practice of speculative Masonry in Tri-Luminar Lodge No. 18, A.F. and A.M. In each calling he proved himself a master builder, both in temporal edifices and spiritual manhood. Many edifices in this community mark the labors of his handiwork, as monuments of his skill, industry and zeal, and mastery of his profession. His speculative Masonry is marked by obedience to the rules laid down on the trestle-board of Masonic Faith, gathering by research the sacred truths revealed in the Book of Life, erecting a living manhood of Honor, Honesty and Virtue, characterized by his conduct, a blessing to his generation. At last, his weary feet had come to the end of his toilsome journey, and from his nerveless hand dropped forever the working tools of life. He resignedly approached the final close, with an unfaltering trust, wrapped the drapery of his couch around him and passed off as to pleasant dreams. Then let us emulate his virtues, cherishing his memory in hearts of deep sorrow to ourselves and unbounded sympathy with the bereaved family and friends. Resolved, That the great lights be draped in mourning for 30 days; that a copy of this memorial be handed to the family, and spread in the minutes of the lodge records, and request city papers to publish same.
