HENRY ASHTON ALEXANDER was born on 12 May 1805. He married first, Elizabeth Cole Irvin, daughter of Joseph Holt Irvin and Elizabeth Cole, on 13 Oct 1828 in Orange County, Virginia. He married second Sarah Ann Moorman, daughter of Samuel Moorman and Judith Clark, on 10 Jan 1838 in Campbell County, Virginia. He died on 12 Jun 1891 in Campbell County at age 86. His will dated 7 Jul 1878 was probated on 10 Aug 1891 in Campbell County.

Henry and his family appeared on the census in Campbell County from 1840 through 1880. His widowed sister, Henrietta Ely, often appeared living with the family. By 1880, Henry’s daughter, Sally Ann, had married John W. Nash and they lived next door.

Two of the Alexander sons, William and Edward, died during the Civil War. Samuel, who was in the War until its end, was apparently so badly affected by it that his father says "But if Samuel, my son's mind becomes perfectly restored..." in his will dated 7 July 1878.
