KNIGHTSBRIDGE
Description and History from 1868 Gazetteer
Suburban district [street] of London, partly in the parish of Westminster St. Margaret, Westminster, but chiefly in the parishes of Kensington and Chelsea, Kensington division of the hundred of Ossulstone, county Middlesex, near Hyde Park Corner, and 3 miles W. of St. Paul's, London.
St George's Road is a road in Southwark, London SE1 running between Westminster Bridge Road to the northwest and Elephant and Castle to the southeast.
St George's Cathedral is on the north side and the Imperial War Museum is on the south side opposite, at the junction with Lambeth Road (A3203). The London College of Communication is at the Elephant and Castle end of the road.
West Square, a typical historic and unspoilt London square, is to the south of St George's Road.

In the early Saxon days, when "Chelsey," and "Kensing town," and "Charing" were country villages, there lay between all three a sort of "No Man's Land," which in process of time came to be called "Knightsbridge," although it never assumed, or even claimed, parochial honours, nor indeed could be said to have had a recognised existence.
The high road which led through Knightsbridge towards Kensington, and so on to Brentford, was, two centuries ago, very badly kept and maintained, as regards both its repairs and the security of those who passed along it. There was no lack of inns about Knightsbridge, but the reputation of their keepers would not bear much inquiry, as it is almost certain that they were in league with the highwaymen who infested the road.
