Facts and Events
Address: Address 1: 197 Rossiter Road City: Rochester State: New York From her brother Henry's notes: Helen was conceived in Yugoslavia and was in six-months gestation when her mother emigrated to America. Helen was born in Rochester, New York at 68 Evergreen Street. She attended St. Michael's School through the 4th grade. When the family moved to Pomeroy Street, she attended St. Andrew's School on Portland Avenue. She completed 8th grade at age 15. At that time, because of the Depression, she dropped out and took employment as a housemaid, working with her mother who was also required to work. Helen had board at the house where she worked; she had a room and bath on the third floor. She had a half day off each week and used the time to attend Continuation School to get a High School Diploma. She continued doing this until she was 17. At that time she got a job a Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. At the same time she met Joseph Buettner at a German Day Picnic at Sea Breeze Grove. He was a musician in the band which was a part-time job. When Helen and Joseph married they lived on Evergreen Street where their son, Frank, was born. In 1941 they moved to a 50-acre farm on Town Line Road. In May 1945, Joe and Helen separated and she moved in with her parents where she remained until 1960. At that time, Helen was employed at Hawkeye Works, Eastman Kodak Co.; she worked there from 1945-1950. A short while later she was transferred to Kodak Park. Eight years later she left Kodak to attend Rochester School of Practical Nursing. At that time she was living on Baycliff Drive. After the death of her mother, she sold her house on Baycliff and bought a larger home on Harper Street near her son's house. She rented out rooms to help with her mortgage payments. In 1975, she and her son sold their homes and moved to homes two blocks from Strong Memorial Hospital where her son was employed. Her son purchased two homes in the area. Helen (1991) occupies the one at 197 Rossiter Road and her son, one block away, at 180 Ervington Road. References
