Hazel's father was Professor Charles Erastus Hudson (FindAGrave memorial 93231013), who drowned in a boating accident. Her mother was Gloria Hudson (real maiden name Maria Da Gloria Bertao); she lived with her "grandparents" the Dobsons in East Weymouth, MA, and met Chester horseback riding in the Blue Hills. The Dobsons disapproved, so Hazel took a cruise to the south, Chester wired her in Norfolk, VA, "Come back to New York". She did, and they were married. At times she claimed to be a descendant of a Portuguese princess from Brazil. Her daughter Carol knew nothing of her background.

It’s much more likely that Maria DaGloria Bertao (here called Gloria) was named after Maria II Da Gloria of Brazil, Queen of Portugal in the 1800’s, but was not descended from her. She married Professor Charles Hudson in 1913 but he died in a drowning accident in Maine in 1914 and is buried there. (Hazel’s birth to the couple in 1911 is still unexplained.). Gloria subsequently married John Johnston Irving and had two more daughters - Jacqueline and Gloria, who were never able to locate their older sister Hazel in her lifetime despite their close geographical locations.

Henry Thomas Dobson and his wife Margaret E Wark Dobson took in children who are listed in census records as BOARDERS. Hazel is listed as such in the 1920 and 1930 census records, ages 7 (incorrect) and 19. (Marguerite is only listed in 1930) Her mother Gloria was never a Dobson it appears. Henry’s FindAGrave memorial is # 125686797.

Gloria’s birth parents were Jose Machado Bertao born 1863 and Maria Candida DeMenses, birth and death unknown, but probably deceased before 1904 * (in fact, before 1899) when the children joined Jose in the USA in October 1904. His second wife brought the children (Maria, Manuel, Emilia and Clementina) along with her own 4 year old son, their half brother Joao (John). Jose had immigrated earlier that year in January 1904. * We now know that Jose and second wife married 22 June 1899 and Portuguese records show that he was a widower by that time.

Hazel is buried in the Randolph Cemetery, Randolph, MA in the Claff Mausoleum, along with 10 other Claffs. Her husband Chester Eliot Claff SR is buried there along with his three brothers, his parents, his first child Edna who died in infancy and his fourth child Carol who was born to Hazel. The two others are two of Chester's sisters-in-law, Frances (Mrs. C.Lloyd) and Ada (Mrs. Warren) Claff.
