In Andover, N. Y., Dec. 25th, 1863, Hazard P. Clarke, in the 80th year of his age. The deceased had been severely afflicted, the last year of his life, with a rheumatic disease, confined most of the time to his house. A few days previous to his death, unusual symptoms appeared; a physician was called, who pronounced his disease a species of inflammation of the bowels; but all remedies failed to produce any effect, and he died, trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Father Clarke was born in Rhode Island, and emigrated with his parents, while quite young, to Brookfield, N. Y., and soon after he experienced a change of heart, and united with the First Seventh-day Baptist Church in that place. In 1818 he removed to Andover, N. Y. He was one of the few who constituted the Seventh-day Baptist Church of Independence, with whom he ever remained as one of its prominent pillars. With him, the stranger and traveler ever found a welcome home; he was pitiful and kind to the poor, and sympathizing with the afflicted, and from youth to old age, possessed an unusual degree of cheerfulness.
He has left a wife, eight children with their families, one adopted son who is in the army, and a large circle of relatives, to sorrow for him. "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of the Lord." J. K.
