Harry grew up in Newport, South Wales. He attended the Newport Higher Elementary School, and was MC of the reunion there in 1920.

He was a sailor in the Mercantile Marine in the First World War, travelling to Greece, Newfoundland, New York, and Sierra Leone. He received his commission as a sub-lieutenant in the RNVR Sea Cadet Corps in 1920. Medals: 1919 British War Medal ribbon; 1924 British War Medal (and clasp), Mercantile Marine Medal.

Harry emigrated to Canada in 1920, leaving Liverpool on The Canada on 27 May 1920 and arriving in Quebec on 5 June 1920.

He worked for many years as an auditor for the CNR.

He separated from his wife, Doris, on 20 January 1940.
