Speculative Parents

If one looks at the marriage record as reported by FamilySearch[3] Harriet's maiden name clearly seems to be "Bristo". But there are hints that the handwriting of the name in the original record may be difficult to decipher. Researchers have variously reported Harriet's maiden name as Bush, Brith, and Booth, which suggests that the record may be subject to interpretation, and thus "Bristo" may be simply a single indexer's best guess. That they all start with "B" suggests that is clear, and perhaps an ending "h" may be somewhat clear as three of these alternatives end with "h".

More substantially, there are two birth records for children of Byron and Harriet that show her name as "Harriet H. Bush".[4][5] The index entry shows that these two come from the same source image (00206), but nevertheless there is at least one primary source giving "Bush" as the maiden name.

One can find a Harriet Bush of appropriate age in a township adjacent to Mountain,[6] listed under Henry and Maria Bush.[7] (A sibling of that Harriet has a Wikipedia entry.[9]) A search for an appropriate Henry and Maria/Mary Bristo has not turned up any candidates.

Resolution of Harriet's parentage needs more research, probably starting with inspection of the images of the original marriage and birth records mentioned above.
